Giovanni Bottesini is often described as the Paganini of the double bass, though his career was much more varied than this. Bottesini considered himself above all an opera composer, and he stunned audiences around the world as a talented conductor as well as a virtuoso. His works form the staple of the romantic double bass repertoire.
