Furtok – La Valse

Bogusław Furtok’s La Valse (2002) is one of many of the composer’s works for four double basses. Most of these pieces were written for Furtok’s double bass quartet, The Flying Basses, though La Valse is smaller in conception than many of his other compositions in this genre. This one-movement piece is exactly what you’d expect – an elegant waltz in a romantic style, making the most of the double bass’s capabilities. This piece would be well-suited for a mixed-ability ensemble; the lowest part is at an intermediate level with mainly accompaniment, and the uppermost part is at the manageable end of virtuoso level, carrying the melody.
