Marcello – Sonata in G Major

Little is known about the origins of Benedetto Marcello’s opus 1 set of cello sonatas, and the earliest sources we have of these works are their first published versions, printed in both London and Amsterdam in 1732. Like many sonatas of the time, these were scored for solo instrument and continuo — another instrument, usually harpsichord in this context, which is given only a bassline and chord symbols from which to improvise an accompaniment. In this edition for double bass by Cathy Elliott, performers are given both a written-out piano part and a continuo part, allowing the piece to be played as a double bass duet with a teacher or fellow student.
